April Unscripted

I think we all went through the perfect winter, to experience more than a smidge of spontaneity. Stuck cars, waking to MORE & MORE snow, hidden ice… the list goes on. How do you think you did when it came to responding to the winter we just faced? Were you happy with your reactions? Or did you chalk it all up to

Not being a winter person?

Gross weather may make us question our spontaneity, but simply walking down a winter street, trying anything for the first time or running into an old acquaintance proves otherwise. We are constantly faced with the many ups and some downs of the unscripted portions of life. The reason we might not think we’re spontaneous, is because our reactions can be rogue, or contrary to what we’d like to have seen happen.

What do you think about spontaneity in your life?

When I think of spontaneity, the good or the bad in it. I always think of that saying from the late Wayne Dyer about Karma. You know, the one that says:

How people treat you is their Karma.
How you react is yours.”

So true. Even though it might be a thing and not a person that we're reacting to.  Like everything, it takes practice and self-awareness to get what seems to be a spontaneous reaction we’re consistently happy with. We’re not born knowing how to manage our emotions, surprises and confrontations. It takes time, learning, patience and sometimes (ugh) experience. A person who grew up around spontaneous role models is going to have a far easier time rolling with life’s quirks than someone who grew up without any experiences to model after.

I think the beauty here, is that once we figure out where we fit on the spectrum of spontaneity, we can all choose to learn ways we can act with certainty instead of simply shooting from the hip and then feeling a sense of regret.  If instead, we slowly welcome and mould our seemingly spontaneous responses into something that feeds and fills us, we can with more regularity, react to unscripted events with a sense of integrity and revelry. The choice, as they say, is ours to make.
